Cincinnati : 2011 LULAC National Conference in Cincinnati?
|
| Posted by admin on 2008/3/15 10:50:00 (975 reads) |

This Friday, March 14th, a delegation from LULAC Cincinnati (League of United Latin American Citizens), incl. the President, Jason Riveiro, and Vice President, Michael Beck, together with Alfonso Cornejo, President of the Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA, Father Bill Jansen from the Hispanic Catholic Ministry, and representatives of Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau: Venus Kent and Jason Dunn, presented to LULAC National Board application for hosting the 2011 LULAC National Conference in Cincinnati. Cincinnati is not a stranger to Hispanic/Latino National Conferences. In 2006 we hosted the National Conference of NSHMBA (National Society of Hispanic MBAs). "Our 2006 NSHMBA National Conference in Cincinnati was a huge success, thanks to the support from the city officials, our corporate and university partners, as well as the hospitality of its residents and business owners! I highly recommend Cincinnati to any organization considering it as a location for a large successful convention! “ said Lourdes M. Hassler, CEO National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), in support of our application for LULAC Conference. It’s worth to notice that in 2010 we’ll be hosting another Hispanic Organization - the National Conference of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers). In all cases the City of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau, and P&G were the main supporters of bringing those conferences to our city. They worked very hard as a team, successfully competing against other cities, for example, Indianapolis, to bring them to Cincinnati. We definitely hope that we’ll be successful in securing the 2011 LULAC conference, as it will have a huge positive economic impact on our city, and it will help to create a positive image of the Cincinnati Latino Community. |

LULAC : LULAC Protests against WLW new commercials
|
| Posted by admin on 2007/8/15 16:50:00 (2589 reads) |
Several Cincinnati organizations that signed a request to WLW 700 Radio Station for an immidiate removal of the "Big Juan" ads (to see the press release click here), finding it insensitive and offending to the Latino/Hispanic community, are uniting again. It is caused by recent on-air advertisement which is transcribed below: {Male announcer} “Illegal Aliens, they are here and they don’t speak English which makes talking to an illegal alien difficult.” So here are a few useful phrases next time you converse with an illegal alien: {Woman speaking Spanish} {Male announcer translating} If anyone asks, tell them you are an exchange student from Sweden. {Woman speaking Spanish} {Male announcer translating} Be careful with those hedge clippers around the garden” To listen to this ad, please click here You can also read an article in Cincinnati Enquirer (click here...) According to LULAC’s Jason Riveiro,” WLW General Manager Chuck Fredrick met with Hispanic leaders last May and committed to cleaning up the stations actions in order to prevent future offensive material. Mr. Fredrick also claimed that the station would make a change in policy and that he would have the final say in all advertising/marketing campaigns. Unfortunately, Mr. Fredrick has already failed on his commitment. The local community is outraged that the station is deliberately demeaning them in an effort to increase ratings and profit at the station.” LULAC and several other organizations such as:
Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA, Inc. American Jewish Committee Council on Arab and Islamic Relations (CAIR) NAACP of Hamilton/Fairfield/West Chester/Lebanon United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1099
are demanding that Mr. Fredrick be removed from his position and that the demeaning advertisements stop. They also want to have a community advisory board appointed in order to work with the station’s management to prevent future misconduct by the station. LULAC is calling for a picketing protests against the “Speaking to An Illegal Alien” ads on Tuesday, August 21, from 4 - 6PM at 700 WLW Offices (CHASE BUILDING) at 8044 Montgomery Road, Suite 650, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236 (ON THE SIDEWALK ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING). |
