Cincinnati : LULAC Members: Maria Lang and Leo Calderon honored by ELLF

Two LULAC Cincinnati members have been honored by the ELLF (English Language Learning Foundation) at its Second Annual Recognition Breakfast on Feb. 25th, 2010. Maria Lang received the "Educator of the Year" Award. She is a teacher and a program coordinator at "Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies". She is an educator and advocate for ELL population in the Greater Cincinnati area. She servers as a member of the various advocacy organizations, such as LULAC, where she is the Director of Education. The English Language Learning Foundation honors the impact of a teacher to change the lives of English language learning children he/she teaches. Leo Calderon received the "Make a Difference" Award. He is a Director of Latino Student Affairs at Northern Kentucky University. Leo has helped major corporations, schools and non-profit organizations effectively address the needs of the growing Latino population. The English Language Learning Foundation created the "Make a Difference Award" to honor an individual who has made a significant difference in the lives of English language learning students and families. Congratulations to the Winners!!! |

Esto va a ser en espanol antonces por favor inviten a los amigos o a la gente que se ve affectada por este problema y darles la esperanza que podemos cambiarlo y que podemos reunificarlos, pero necesitamos el apoyo de todos y cada uno de ellos. Meet our Guest Speaker: MARY RONAN - the Superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools. Thursday, February 25, 2010 6:30pm - 8:30pm Rookwood Tower, Fifth Floor, Room 500 3805 Edwards Road Cincinnati, OH Celebrating 81 Years of Service, LULAC is the oldest and largest Hispanic organization in the USA.
In 2011 Cincinnati will be hosting the LULAC National Convention.
Our focus is on:
• Education • Housing • Civil Rights • Health • Public Safety • Employment and Economic Development • Arts and Culture
LULAC Cincinnati has only been in existence since November 2005, but is making a huge difference in the community. For example, we have:
• awarded over $100,000 in scholarship and educational programs to needy Hispanics • launched two Young Readers Programs (at AMIS (Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies) and at Roberts Padeia Academy.) • donated 15 tons of protein to Cincinnati Food Bank • established a Partnership with NAACP to address common issues • increased our membership by 200% in 2009

ULAC (League of United Latin American Citzens) held its first Community Meeting at Su Casa Hispanic Center. It is a monthly reach-out meeting to the Latino Community, to provide education opportunities in such areas as Taxes, Education, Health, Immigration, Housing, and to learn first hand about the issues facing the Latino community. For this first meeting LULAC invited Congressman Steve Driehaus to address current legislation issues. ULAC Cincinnati held its first Community Meeting at Su Casa Hispanic Center. It is a monthly reach-out meeting to the Latino Community, to provide education opportunities in such areas as Taxes, Education, Health, Immigration, Housing, and to learn first hand about the issues facing the Latino community. For this first meeting LULAC invited Congressman Steve Driehaus to address current legislation issues.

Please register now for Educating Latinos for Kentucky’s Future (ELKF) 1st Annual Conference, which will take place February 11-12, 2010. This conference, Opportunities and Challenges Facing Latino Students in the Commonwealth, will take place at Northern Kentucky University and will highlight the following items: - Thursday, Feb. 11 - Pre-conference Workshop
- Thursday, Feb. 11 – Conference Opening Reception – Fiesta Latina!
- Friday, Feb. 12 – Conference for Professionals
- Friday, Feb. 12 - Conference for College Student Leaders
Who should attend? Educators, public and private sector, community leaders, non-profit, etc. The keynote speaker for Friday’s conference will be Dr. Richard Fry, Senior Research Associate for the Pew Hispanic Center. LULAC Cincinnati Council started 2010 on a very strong note: its first meeting of 2010 was the largest ever, and the motivation and excitement in the room was sky high. The excellent food was provided by Taqueria Mercado As the Council is preparing for the 2011 LULAC National Convention to be hosted in Cincinnati, our areas of focus are: • Education • Housing • Civil Rights • Health • Public Safety • Employment and Economic Development • Arts and Culture
and the new members had a chance to learn more our 2010 goals, and join the team of their interest.
