LULAC Ohio : LULAC Ohio Strongly Opposes Ohio BMV’s Policy to Deny Puerto Rico-Issued Birth Certificates

Cincinnati--The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of Ohio calls for the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to implement a policy regarding the validity of Puerto Rican Birth Certificates that parallels that of the USCIS (United States Immigration and Naturalization Services) and the government of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rican. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is refusing to issue driver’s licenses and other rights to U.S. citizens born in Puerto Rico because the certified copy of their birth certificate was issued prior to July 1, 2010. As a consequence, the Ohio BMV’s current policy is placing an unwarranted burden upon U.S. citizens born in Puerto Rico. After September 30, 2010, all certified copies of birth certificates reporting births in Puerto Rico issued prior to July 1, 2010, will not by accepted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. In the interim, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles should continue to accept all certified copies of Puerto Rican birth certificates as they are considered legally valid. Under the current policy of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Ohio is unconstitutionally providing fewer rights than that given under Federal Laws.

LULAC Ohio : LULAC Ohio Calls on ClearChannel’s WTVN 610 to Apologize for the “Trip to Phoenix, AZ” Promotion

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of Ohio is calling on the Columbus community to join together in rejecting ClearChannel's WTVN 600 Radio Station for its racially insensitive, anti-immigrant promotion. The advertisement depicts Mayor Coleman on a Green Card in a trip giveaway to Phoenix, Arizona. This image is meant to be cute; except it's not. The promo states that the winner is invited to "spend the weekend chasing aliens and spend a few pesos in the desert." The message of this promotion is clear and concise. It reads: "win a trip to hunt human beings" ClearChannel and its WTVN 600 Radio Station have broadcast a call toward open violence against Latinos, and this is completely unacceptable! The undersigned stand in solidarity and support of the Latino/Hispanic community in Columbus, Cental Ohio and every peace loving community. LULAC is calling on people of all faiths, races, ethnicities, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, genders and age groups to stand as one voice, one faith and one community with justice for all.
“We believe that our community must respect and protect all people, send forth a message of compassion and dignity and engage all citizens of good will and affirming actions”
Community members will turn in hundreds of letters to Brian Dytko, General Manager of Clear Channel in Columbus, Ohio. By making this statement as a community, we declare that we are committed to work together to hold accountable those cynical few who would see Ohio's residents weakened and divided. Columbus is a multicultural and extremely diverse city. We must hold this fact up, not as a call to violence against others, but as a beacon of pride around which we all gather as one interconnected community.
Therefore, we request ClearChannel's WTVN610 Radio Station to immediately remove the promotion and to release a public written apology (half page size) written by those who created & approved the ad. Finally, this apology should be signed by WTVN’s General Manager.

LULAC Ohio : First Immigration Blog for state of Ohio
|
| Posted by admin on 2010/5/15 17:40:00 (107 reads) |
|
Dear colleagues & LULAC Cincy members,
The following blog, established by some associates and me, is now up and running: blog here So far as we know, this is the first research based, immigration blog in the state.
We want this to become a reliable e-source for Ohioans; with facts, substantive expert opinions and relevant stories. We also need the word to get out that the blog exists: if nobody reads it, it won't matter how substantive the blog is. So please begin sending the blog information out to your contacts (including family, friends and colleagues) - and start asking them to send the blog out to their contacts as well.
I recommend sending the link out via email and facebook, of course. But I also recommend that you tell people (in passing or not) in a face-to-face way (or by phone); make the ask directly. People are more likely to do as you request if you do so in person.
This should be sent out to politicians (or aids) who we know to be hungry for a counter-narrative on the immigration debate, but who feel like they don't have access to the data or don't exactly know how to articulate findings and opinions. They need those tools and besides our direct interactions with them, this needs to become part of that tool kit.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you everyone,
Leo Pierson Acting VP LULAC Cincinnati
